The DFG-funded Graduiertenkolleg 1957 studies the effects of hormones derived from adipose tissue (adipokines) on CNS function and in turn, the control of adipose tissue and body weight by the brain. We are looking for highly motivated candidates to join the following PhD projects. Tentative start May 2017.
1. Identification of leptin transporters at the blood-brain barrier (Schwaninger)
2. Effect of adipokines/cytokines on HIF-1 regulated astrocyte glucose metabolism (Jöhren)
3. Relevance of central TRH neurons for regulation of fat browning and brown adipose tissue activity (Müller-Fielitz / Schwaninger)
4. Adipocyte-brain communication after deep brain stimulation (Brüggemann /Wilms)
5. Crosstalk of dopamine and thyroid hormone signaling in the control of thermogenic adipose tissue (Mittag / Iwen)
6. Circadian regulation of brown adipose tissue activity in humans (Schmid)
7. A systems level approach to modulation of adipocyte-brain crosstalk by transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (Münte / Brede)
8. Nesfatin-1’s effects on energy homeostasis: dissecting the role of PVN and NTS oxytocin neurons (Lehnert / Schulz)
9. Epigenetic modulation of behavioral rhythms after bariatric surgery (Kirchner / Oster)
10. Adipokineregulation of circadian clocks in hypothalamic neurons (Oster)
11. Animal models of obesity/diabetes: Influence of the angiotensin system on neurovascular coupling and memory formation (Raasch /Bader)

Qualifications
- Research-based MSc degree passed with an above-average grade in natural sciences, preferably in Biology, Molecular Life Science, Neuroscience, Nutrition & Biomedicine, Pharmacology or a related subject
- Excellent English language skills in speaking and writing
- Pro-active attitude, good communication skills and be able to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team
