Abstract: Sensorimotor integration, the process of converting sensory inputs into functional movement, is essential in everyday life. Measuring sensorimotor integration through techniques such as somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) via electroencephalography (EEG) or paired pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is critical in determining spatiotemporal processes involved in typical neurophysiological functioning. Furthermore, changes in these neurophysiological measures related to sensorimotor integration may capture adaptive and maladaptive neuroplasticity. In this talk I will discuss my work that investigated SEPs and development of two novel dual-site TMS techniques related to sensorimotor integration. I will also discuss how I have been recently using these neurophysiological measures after exercise and in people with neurological disorders in pursuit of developing valid and reliable biomarkers of adaptive and maladaptive neuroplasticity.
