Abstract
At synapses, a chemical signal is converted into fast electrical deflections leading to a plethora of downstream effects including self-regulation (i.e. plasticity). Since this process of synaptic transmission is altered in several neurological disorders, it is therefore an attractive but complex target for pharmacological intervention. I will describe here state-of-the-art optogenetics, electrophysiological and imaging technology that helps monitor and control at high resolution the transfer of information across synapses in nervous circuits. In combination with OMIC approaches, they hold the promise of improving our understanding of nerve pathophysiology and develop tailored therapy.
